Kenny Konz #1 draft pick in 1951

fchenevey@whbc.com

Here’s another story from the east side of the county.

Kenny Konz of Alliance passed away at Alliance Hospital.  He was 79.

He was a Vet, and a loving husband and father.  He was also number 22.

Kenny was the Cleveland Browns’ number one draft pick in 1951.

He played until 1959;  halfback, safety and punter.

You older guys will remember Kenny Konz.

All is well at Our House.  I hope it is well at Yours, too.   Bye for now.

I’d like to get a weight off my chest….

Pam Cook
pcook@whbc.com

I’d like to get a weight off my chest….

And the rest of me!  Actually, over the past year I’ve done just that.  Since January of last year I’ve lost 55 pounds.  I have about 10 more pounds to go and then I will continue to maintain my healthy lifestyle.  That’s the tough part.  Many of you have asked me how I did it, what’s my secret.  There’s really no magic potion.  I will, however, give you some notes on the things that helped me achieve my goal (remember, these are my guidelines, you should do what is right for you and talk with your doctor beforehand):
  • Be ready to commit.  If you don’t put your mind to it and really want it, you will never do it.
  • Never deny yourself.  I am strict for 6 days a week.  Sunday is my free day.  That’s the day when I think about that brownie or bowl (small) of chips I wanted all week long and I reward myself.  I don’t go overboard but I do know it is my day to treat myself.
  • I limit myself to 1000 to 1100 calories per day.  The number of calories you need to consume to lose weight differs for everyone.  Do what is best for you.
  • Go slow.  It’s not a race, it’s a marathon.  Don’t try to lose 20 pounds to go to your class reunion.  Commit yourself to a long-term goal.
  • Take baby steps.  Try to lose a pound per week.  Some weeks you’ll lose 3, other none.  During my year long effort there were 12 weeks when I lost nothing.  You just have to stay the course and keep at it.
  • Watch your fat intake.  I eat 21 grams of fat per day.
  • Portion control is key, it’s not what you eat sometimes, but how much you eat.
  • Be careful though, those 100 calorie snack packs seem good, but check out how much fat and sugar they contain.  It might be healthier to eat a piece of fruit, a salad or some soup for that sam amount of calories.
  • Always be prepared — take healthy food to work with you, if there are fattening things on a menu at a restaurant ask for the chicken without the sauce, or, when in doubt, eat a salad.  (see below)
  • Eat a salad, but watch out for the dressing.  It can be the most fattening part.  Those spray salad dressings are awesome!
  • Spray butter is a godsend.  It tastes good.  Not like real butter of course, but it saves you a ton of calories.
  • GET YOURSELF A DIET BUDDY — my Mom is my support system.  I e-mail her my menu every day.  She tells me what the calorie count was, what kinds of foods I need to eat more of, and she just plain supports me.  I needed her every minute.
  • Exercise — I do one hour of aerobics, twice a week.  Start off slow and work up but you have to do something.  Walk, swim, aerobics….something.
Finally:
Here’s a sample of my daily menu:

BREAKFAST:

100 calorie English Muffin with 2 teaspoons of peanut butter
small cup of light apple sauce
LUNCH:
Progresso 100 calorie Soup (you can eat the whole can for 200 calories)
a banana
DINNER:
grilled or baked chicken breast with seasonings or light barbecue sauce
baked potato with spray butter and sometimes some salsa on it
1 cup broccoli, spinach, or fresh green beans
SNACKS (through out the day)
diet hot chocolate with fat free cool whip (40 calories total)
sugar free jello (10 calories)
light potato chips (17 for 100 calories)
or an apple sliced with 2 teaspoons of peanut butter
LOTS OF WATER (64 ounces per day)

Here’s to a healthy 2008!  I can’t wait for summer!

He Didn’t Make The List, But He Should Have!

Victor Schreckengost
- He Didn’t Make The Celebrity Obituary List - But He Should Have!

by Fred Chenevey
fchenevey@whbc.com

Viktor Schreckengost didn’t make the celebrity Obit list, but he should have.

In the world of art, ceramic art and design, he was a Super Star, and from little ole Sebring, Ohio.

Sebring was a pottery town around the turn of the century.

His pop gave him a lump of clay one day and told him to do something with it - did he ever.

He graduated from the Cleveland Institute of Art in ‘29 and finished there 70 years later, teaching generations of young artists.

He may be best know for the piece commissioned by Eleanor Roosevelt - ”The Jazz Bowl.”

Check him out by “googling” him on the internet or look around this site at http://www.viktorschreckengost.org/ .
Be sure to go to the “About Victor” section.

He was called “America’s  Da Vinci.”

He also designed the Very Coolest Little Peddle Cars, usually…that only the rich kids got.

Hats off to Papa & Momma Bear!

A whole bunch of folks had a Great Time Friday evening.

I was one of them attending the Papa Bears Dance party at the Canton Civic Center.
The money raised goes to the Canton ex-Newsboys, a 100 percent charity that buys
hats, gloves, coats and shoes for kids right here in Stark County.

Two great local bands kept the crowd on the dance floor, Jimmy and the Soul Blazers and LaFlavour.

I saw a hundred people I know, and made a few New friends.

When this comes up again next year, make sure you’re there.

Hats off to Mr. and Mrs. DePietro, The Papa and Momma Bear, for supporting so many area charities.

Pam Makes a Case for the Browns?

Pam makes a case for a Cleveland Brown?

Okay, I know most of you are not going to believe this but . . .

I am actually really mad that Cleveland Brown’s offensive lineman Joe Thomas
did not win the NFL “Rookie of the Year” award.

Adrian Peterson of the Minnesota Vikings was the winner.
When I heard that it made me think and I decided to look into it.

Peterson was the “sexy” pick.
Yes, he set a new NFL single game rushing record
and almost got the Vikings in to the playoffs single-handedly,
but did you know he only had a little more than 300 yards over his last seven games?

Peterson was hurt for several games and the Vikings remained in the hunt.

On the other side of the story –
Joe Thomas is the reason the Cleveland Browns made their stunning turn around this year
and were the “feel good” story of the year.  The Browns only gave up on average a half a sack a game.
That is an unbelievable statistic.  He is a Pro Bowler in my mind.
Derek Anderson had a great year but could not have done it without Joe Thomas.
If you isolated him during a game you were amazed by his strength and smarts for a first year player.

As a life-long Steeler fan, I know what a good offensive line can do for you.
The Steelers are heading into the playoffs having lost 3 offensive lineman this season,
2 in the past few days.  A guy off their practice squad (who played for a D-II school) will start Saturday night.
Those injuries hurt way more than the loss of Willie Parker.

Browns fans suffered through quarterback after quarterback because of a porous offensive line.
They fixed it by making Joe Thomas their #1 pick, and they became playoff contenders.

I never thought I’d find myself defending someone who wears an orange helmet,
but someone, please, give Joe Thomas his due!!!!!

Happy New Year

Happy New Year!

All is well at our house.
We hope you, too, are enjoying the holidays.

Peace is a word that is used over and over during the holidays . . . Peace on Earth.

The murder, assassination of Benizer Bhouto shattered those optimistic thoughts.
As we will see, this was a traumatic event, though not totally unexpected.

The day she returned to Pakistan, her supporters worried.

Anyway…more on that later.

Our Christmas gift was a week with our son, Christopher.
And we filled it up -
Two Cavs games,
a round of golf December 26th at Skyland Pines;
that course is in great shape,
and many gatherings with Family and Friends.

Now, if the Colts would have just come through for us >>>>

That’s all for now.

Caribbean Cruise 2007

pcook@whbc.com

It’s hard to believe we are home already from our Caribbean cruise.  It seems like we planned and planned, packed and packed and now it is over in a flash.

It was a fabulous experience.

I’d like to share a few of my thoughts….I love moving from port to port.

You wake up each morning with a difference scene out your cabin door.

This was our 5th cruise and the caribbean water never ceases to amaze me.
It is the bluest water you will ever see.  The food was great, the weather was great
and the casino, was, well, fun but uneventful!

If you ever have a chance to sail on a Royal Caribbean ship that has the grand promenade - do it!
It was awesome.  I could have stayed in the cafe all day just watching folks, listening to music,
and talking with others from all over the world.

We had some rough seas but we all made it through.
It took a day away at the pool but there are so many other activities indoors we had no problem staying busy.

I will say, though, that the best part of the cruise was the group we took along.
It was one of the best groups ever!  We had so much fun.

Hats off to Steve Karapasha at the Canton AAA for treating us like gold.

Travelling with a group is so great because there are so many perks
and you always have someone to turn to for help.

We are hoping to do this again next year.

It’ll be the Western Caribbean on the brand new Ruby Princess of the Princess cruise line.
If you’d like to go, contact Steve at the AAA.  It’s time to butter up the boss!

Have a great holiday!

When to report and when to just sit on a story

morningteam@whbc.com

When to report and when to just sit on a story

The Omaha shooter wanted to go out with his photo on front pages around the world.

He got his wish.

This morning several internet sites allow you to listen to the horrific 9-1-1 call from the mall.

He killed 8 people.  Total strangers.

He must have concluded that because his life seemed to be in shambles,
he would inflict revenge on society.

Several listeners have suggested the media promotes this madness
by giving them the attention they want.  Well, there is some truth in that,
but I doubt you’ll ever convince a good reporter to turn their back on such a story.

Others have complained about terrible parents,
and a need to return to the rules we lived by years ago.

I wish I had the answer, but I welcome your thoughts.

We’re off for the sun and fun of a caribbean cruise.

Wish you could come along!

The Cruise

pcook@whbc.com

The Cruise

Oh, how appropriate it is that we got our first snowfall of the season
just days before Fred and I are to head off to the Caribbean.

I really don’t mean to rub it in, but we are very excited
about the prospect of getting away from the cold and snow.
I hope the 100 or so listeners who chose to travel with us
are as excited as we are.

This is always so much fun
and they get the inside scoop on the Morning Team….

Do Fred’s legs really look like chicken legs?

Will Pam ever see the sun if the Casino is open?

How many cases of self-tanner will Fred go through?

Can Pam stand it that she won’t see the Steelers take on the mighty Patriots?

I hope that all next week (December 10th - December 15th)
you will tune in to hear what Fred and I are up to…
it’s bound to make you smile!

Bon Voyage!!!!

Strawberry Pretzel Jello Salad

pcook@whbc.com

Hi Everyone:

During our weekly visit with Saimi Bergmann from The Repository
on Wednesday, November 28, 2007, we talked about a traditional holiday dish
at my house called Jello Pretzel Salad.  It is very popular and we all love it.

It’s a nice combination of salty and sweet.

Many of you have called and requested the recipe, so here it is!

Let me know what you think!

Strawberry Pretzel Jello Salad

12 servings (approximately)

2                cups crushed pretzels
3/4             cup melted butter
3                tablespoons sugar
1 (8 oz)      package cream cheese
1                cup sugar
8                ounces Cool Whip (large)
1 (6 oz)      strawberry Jell-o gelatin dessert
2                cups boiling water
2 (10oz)     packages frozen strawberries, thawed

1.  Mix pretzels, butter, sugar and pat into 9 x 13 pan.
Bake at 375 degrees for 8 minutes; cool.

2.  Mix sugar and cream cheese, then add Cool Whip.  Spread over crust and put in refrigerator.
Combine strawberry jello, water and strawberries; chill until jello is partially jelled.
     Pour over cream cheese.
     Refrigerate until firm.
